Reporter, Energy Central
Energy Central, a media company that empowers, engages, and educates utility and power professionals, is growing our content & community team with the addition of an energy reporter.
This team player will be responsible for curating, unearthing, synthesizing, and writing the most important and impactful stories in electric power and modern energy. Your work will be the heartbeat of the Energy Central Daily Newsletter, a roundup of the biggest energy news delivered Monday through Friday to 120K power pros.
What you'll do:
Your primary goal is to find and tell the big stories that are determining the future of energy for an industry at a crossroads. Key niches we cover include the energy transition, the power grid of the future, energy innovation and tech, the business of power, the process of scaling next-gen ideas from nuclear to VPPs, changes to both the electric power workforce and customer base, the impacts of AI on power, and more.
Covering this well means building out a source list, getting on the phone with experts and insiders, asking needle-moving questions, and efficiently communicating what you learn in pithy, analytical newsletter stories.
You’ll work with a skilled newsletter editor to meaningfully improve the quality of Energy Central’s Daily Newsletter through strong reporting, thoughtful curation, and clever delivery. You’ll join a growing team diligently focused on pushing our editorial standard and delivering excellent energy industry coverage across media.
You’ll help refine and implement Energy Central’s voice—one that’s friendly, intelligent, curious, and optimistic—across written content in newsletters and on social media.
What we're looking for:
A voracious reader of energy news, Substacks, think pieces, etc. (if you want to be a good writer, you need to be a good reader)
An energy wonk who loves to learn, talk, and think about the future of electric power (we’re looking for someone with a strong eye for curation of what really matters)
Someone with experience in journalism, media, comms, or related fields with excellent communication skills, attention to detail, and organization (experience as a journalist or reporter is a plus)
Down with a little ambiguity and white space—we’re building something big, and we’re all about bringing creativity to the process
What we can offer:
Competitive compensation
Health, dental, and vision insurance
Unlimited PTO (mandatory 10 days per year minimum)
Strong opportunity for growth at profitable, bootstrapped startup
You can live anywhere in North America, so long as you’re excited about coming to NYC to visit headquarters regularly. This job is remote-friendly, but if you *do* happen to live in NYC, you can work out of our Manhattan office with the rest of the Smooth Media team.
We are ridiculously confident in the future of both energy innovation and the team we’re assembling to cover it. If you’re excited at the prospect of joining an ambitious, curious, and excited team—apply below.
